There are official documents that prove that J Edgar Hoover had information that might have prevented the destruction of our US Navy's Pacific fleet  at Pearl Harbor and killed 3,000 US  sailors on Dec 7, 1941.  Hoover possessed documents that proved the the Axis ( Germany, and Japan) were preparing an attack on Pearl Harbor.   In August 1941 Hoover was given a document that was created by a double agent named Dusko Popov .  The document left no doubt that the Japanese were preparing to attack Pearl Harbor. Popov was a double agent and went to Hawaii in the summer of 41 to spy on the military facilities there.  Specifically he was assigned the task of gathering info about the Naval base at Pearl Harbor.  The information was intended for the Japanese by way of Germany.  The bottom line is:  J.Edgar Hoover KNEW that Popov had gathered the intel and he KNEW that the Japanese were preparing for an attack on Pearl Harbor and he did NOTHING with the information.   Because he was embarrassed that the FBI had not discovered the plot.   

Yes, this may seem to be way off the subject of this forum..... But in reality is is an integral part of the coup d' etat in Dallas 22 years later.

By 1963 J. Edgar Hoover was the ultimate "godfather".....  He was beyond touch because he could blackmail any senator or government official that threatened.

US used Nazis as Cold War spies

Declassified US records reveal the nation's intelligence chiefs used hundreds of Nazis as spies and informants after World War Two.

Central Intelligence Agency officials are said to have turned to the country's former enemies to help beat the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Academics studying the documents say America used at least 1,000 ex-Nazis.

Some had served at the highest levels of the Nazi Party, and were recruited to work as spies for the US in Europe.

Former SS officer Otto von Bolschwing reportedly wrote policy papers on how to terrorise Jews, but was hired by the CIA to spy in Europe after World War Two.

The agency is said to have relocated him and his family to New York in the 1950s as a reward for loyal service.

Nazi collaborator Aleksandras Lileikis - linked to the massacres of tens of thousands of Jews in Lithuania - was recruited by the US as a spy in East Germany and later brought over to Boston.

Hoover, The evil bastard had six German/ Americans electrocuted to keep the world from learning that He ( The FBI) had NOT discovered the German saboteurs who had came ashore near Amagansett, Long Island, NY on a foggy night in June of 42.

One of the German Americans named George Dash went to the FBI office in NY and revealed that he and seven other's had been sent by Germany to sabotage light metal factories in the US but they had no intention of carrying out the mission. ( They simply wanted to get out of Nazi Germany and back to America their adopted Home. )   But Hoover claimed that he ( the astute and alert FBI) caught them.  Hoover had six of them executed, and the other two locked away in solitary confinement   so that they never could reveal that Hoover had not "caught" them .... and the truth was that they were loyal Americans.

It's been claimed that FDR knew of the impeding attack but he allowed it to happen so as to damp down isolationism and get into the war. He might not have been expecting thousands to die, or the Philippines to be so quickly put out of action. Thus the aircraft carriers went sent out of Pearl well to the south of the Imperial Fleet's course. The battleships were relatively obsolete by then and were left in port as "bait".

That's silly. This plan would have to include great men like George Marshall too.

How is alarming Pearl Harbor and fighting off an attack not getting us into a war? The Japanese were going to attack us; we would defend ourselves and the war would follow. That would be true whether we lost all of our battleships or none. At the same time the Japanese were attacking Pearl Harbor they were invading the Phillipines, Guam, Wake Island, Singapore, Hong Kong and other parts of Asia and also attacking British and Dutch ships and troops.

The war was going to happen even if the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was completely repulsed.

I have studied a bit about the events that lead up to the attack on Pearl Harbor...and I seriously doubt that FDR knew anything about the impending attack.  ( this sounds like a rumor that J.Edgar Hoover might have created)   But if Hoover had taken action when he received the intel that Popov had provided, FDR would have had more info, and probably would have been prepared and waiting, when the Japanese flew into Pearl that sunny Sunday morning.   But Hoover's ego was bigger than Hawaii.....

P.S.  On Saturday night ( 12/ 6/ 41)  FDR did realize that Japan was about to declare war.   He had read an intercepted message that had been sent to the Japanese embassy in Washington and the information in that intercepted message left no doubt that war was imminent.   He went to bed and decided to wait til morning, He was negligent in not taking immediate action.   But If J.Edgar Hoover had told him about the Japanese spying on the Naval base at Pearl Harbor he would have had that much more info, and he would have deduced that the war would start with an attack on Pearl.
