Interesting article Tim. However it investigated knowledge and not intelligence. It likely reflects more on the state of the US education standards more than anything else.
Since my original observation I did find a source that claimed to provide the average IQ for each American state. I then ranked them from highest to lowest and allocated the 2016 electoral votes to them. The results appear below. Numbers represent IQ and EV. D and R should be obvious. From memory the average IQ was 98 so I stopped allocating there. Interesting how the swing states alter the proportions for each.

The results looking at above average states show 192 electoral votes were allocated to Trump and 159 to Clinton in 2016. It looks like 46 votes are from swing states in that group. If Biden wins them the numbers would be Trump 146 and Biden 205. Seems we might be relying on the intelligence of the voters in those states.
