GOP senator dodges question over whether Trump should condemn Putin

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), chairman of the Senate Republican campaign arm, dodged questioning on SaPersonay regarding whether former President Trump should condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a brief interview with CBS News’s Robert Costa at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Scott was asked if Trump, who is scheduled to speak later SaPersonay, should condemn Putin.

“Well, clearly, we all ought to be condemning what's going on in Ukraine. I mean, Putin is a thug. We need to hold him accountable. I hope the Biden administration, hope everybody, you know, holds — does everything they can to hold the Biden administration —” Scott said before Costa interjected to ask if that included Trump.

Scott said that was a decision Trump needed to make.

“Putin is a thug. It's despicable. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine. I'm gonna do everything I can to help the Ukraine citizens. We need to make sure we provide all the resources we can,” Scott continued.

"So it's up to him whether he condemns Putin or not?” Costa asked Scott.

“Of course, it’s always up to him,” the Florida senator answered.

Costa pressed the Florida Republican again, asking if wanted to hear the former president issue a “strong message” against the Russian invasion.

“Well, I talked to President Trump. I talked to Republicans all over the country. We're all focused on making sure we get the Senate back,” Scott answered.

Trump has faced criticism for remarks he made earlier this week on the "The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show" in which he said that Putin’s recognition of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine was "pretty savvy" and "smart."

"I went in yesterday, and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius,'" Trump said during the interview. "Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful."

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), a frequent critic of Trump and one of a group of House Republicans who voted to impeach him last year, said his praise for Putin “aids our enemies.”

"Former President Trump’s adulation of Putin today — including calling him a 'genius' — aids our enemies," the Wyoming Republican tweeted. "Trump’s interests don’t seem to align with the interests of the United States of America."

Former national security adviser H.R. McMaster said that Putin should not be praised following Russia's invasion into Ukraine.

"He is certainly not someone to be praised, and I think what we ought to be encouraged by is the reaction across the free world. Really what Putin wants more than anything is disunity, because disunity will lead to an ineffective response," McMaster said during an interview on CNN.

The Hill has reached out to Scott’s office for further comment.

Trump realizes that praise is a great tactic to use on a narcissist like Putin.  Rather than simply pushing him to further extremes with insults, Trump was successful in appealing to his ego.  A small price to pay to keep the peace.  Piling on Putin in this situation leaves him no room for de-escalation.   That makes a bad situation much more dangerous.  Effective diplomacy always leaves your adversary with a means to save face.   JFK recognized that during the Cuban missile crisis when he made a deal to remove missiles from Turkey.  Unfortunately, that subtlety is lost on fanatics who view every situation through their own political bias regardless of the cost.

As the entire world condemns Putin and rallies around Ukraine and President Biden's strong leadership, Russian assst Criminal Donald is once again praising his puppet master. Trump is a Russian asset, GOP Traitors, Traitor Trump, GOP is the Russian Party have all been trending on Twitter all over the world. Also white nationalists has been trending since they are the GOP base. Absolutely disgusting and that's why the GOP will lose badly in November. Americans reject hate and white supremacy and a GOP party that supports Putin.

Once again, Criminal Donald praises a murderous dictator and attacks the United States and our allies. And the ignorant morons in the crowd laughs along with him. It was his 4 years of disaster that made this whole thing possible by appeasing his puppet master Putin and weakening Ukraine. Old Donnie looks even more feeble on stage as he hangs to one side with his health rapidly deteriorating.

More lies.

"The Russian attack on Ukraine is appalling, it's an outrage and an atrocity that should never have been allowed to occur.  We are praying for the proud people of Ukraine. God bless them all."

Security experts and former U.S. officials are praising President Joe Biden for his outstanding job on bringing NATO and all the world together to defeat Putin. The crippling sanctions President Biden imposed is the harshest Russia has ever experienced. For 4 years Criminal Donald let his puppet master Putin do whatever he wanted as well as doing his best to weaken NATO. And now we are watching those consequences play out after 4 disastrous years. All these experts are telling it like it is and knocking down the bogus right wing propaganda. President Biden is a strong effective leader and has united the world against an evil murderous dictator. But on the flipside, we have Criminal Donald singing Putin's praises like the true puppet he is. Donnie is a loser and a coward siding with the enemy.

Condi Rice turns tables on Fox News host: NATO 'unites' under Biden the way Trump never could

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice on Sunday praised President Joe Biden after NATO united under him in a way that it did not under President Donald Trump.

"There's this worry among generals whom I've talked with," Fox News host Harris Faulkner told Rice. "Nobody wants a world war. But that [Russian President Vladimir Putin] would do something at this point that he might not have done a few years ago in terms of more of a land grab, the Baltics for instance. And because of Article 5 with NATO, what does that mean for us. We get involved in war. We can't go to war with a nuclear power."

"We have to make sure that [Putin] really understands that the cost would be extraordinary to try to cross an Article 5 line," Rice replied. "An attack upon one is an attack upon all. And so the Baltic states are indeed protected under that guarantee by the United States of America."

"If it looks like he is not going to achieve his objectives, there is a chance that he pulls up," she continued. "But I want to make sure that he does."

"So what we're doing in reinforcing NATO forces in the Baltics and in Poland -- NATO's eastern flank, if you will -- this is the way to make sure that he knows the costs would be very high," the former secretary of state remarked.

Rice suggested that Biden has been able to "unite" NATO to push back against Putin's alleged war crimes to a degree that former presidents could not.

"It is certainly against every principle of international law and international order, and that's why throwing the book at them now in terms of economic sanctions and punishments is also a part of it," she said. "And I think the world is there. Certainly, NATO is there. He's managed to unite NATO in ways I didn't think I would ever see again after the end of the Cold War."

As president, Trump actively worked to undermine NATO and even considered withdrawing from the treaty organization.
