GOP reps push resolution to ban Democratic Party over past slavery ties
It's a response to the body's vote this week to remove Confederate statues

A group of Republican House members introduced a resolution Thursday that would effectively ban the Democratic Party from the House or force a party name change over past slavery ties.

A group of Republican House members, led by Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas, introduced a resolution Thursday that would effectively ban the Democratic Party from the House or force a party name change over past slavery ties -- a response to the recent efforts to remove tributes to past members of the Confederacy from the halls of Congress.

It specifically cites the Democratic Party platform's support for slavery between 1840 and 1856, and other racist actions by party members through the early-to-mid 1900s, before calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to "remove any items that names, symbolizes or mentions any political organization or party that has ever held a public position that supported slavery or the Confederacy" from the House and its properties. The resolution also says such a party "shall either change its name or be barred from participation in the House of Representatives."

Gohmert, in a statement accompanying the bill, told Democrats they should rebrand to "avoid triggering" anyone.

RICKPLANT: History of Democrat Party, party of slavery and lynching:

Hey Rick, how many black children have been aborted with your Dumbocrat vote??

Planned Parenthood, special interest of the Democrat party, vote for the Dems and you are voting for baby killing.

Don't ask Rick though, he thinks it was the Republicans who supported slavery,

BFD about protesters. BLM/ANTIFA protests have gotten a lot of people killed.

Real big man Rick Plant, voting for black babies and all babies to be aborted, killed. That's your vote.

Antifa militant arrested for stabbing black Trump supporter in Portland

Hear about this? While at the same time, that man was killed in Milwaukee.

BLMKKKANTIFA, all the same, Dems have more death on their hands.

I guess Rick is between bong hits and reading Rolling Stone to deny the connection between the Confederacy and Democrat party.    :D

The problem with the GOP argument is that it is disingenuous. Back then the Democrats were the conservatives and the Republicans were the liberals. The Democrats wanted a small, limited federal government, while the Republicans wanted a larger, more powerful federal government. The Democrats wanted lower tariffs, while the Republicans favored higher tariffs. On most issues, the antebellum and Jim Crow Democrats were the ideological ancestors of modern conservative Republicans, and the antebellum and anti-Jim Crow Republicans were the ideological ancestors of modern Democrats.

Simply put, back then most conservatives either supported slavery and wanted to expand it or at least opposed any efforts to abolish slavery, while most liberals opposed slavery and favored the abolition of slavery or at least favored strictly limiting it to the states where it was already legal, opposed any extension of slavery into the territories, and supported personal liberty laws that prevented slave catchers from apprehending runaway slaves in Northern states that had such laws.
