George Mantello’s work in frustrating the Nazi’s Extermination of the Jews program was very significant. He was very important in bringing to the world’s attention the transport of Jews from Hungary to extermination camps in 1944. This brought down upon the Fascist Hungarian dictator enough World pressure on him to stop the transport. He was happy to go along with it if he could pretend that this would not result in mass deaths, and so could avoid punishment after the war. Although over 500,000 Hungarian Jews died during the Holocaust, about 255,000 survived.

The only reason George Mantello was not declared a “Righteous Among the Nations” (or “Righteous Among the Gentiles”) is because he was Jewish.

I guess James DiEugenio and Joan Mellen (and the Neo-Nazis) would have described both George Mantello and Raoul Wallenberg as being involved in the “Jewish refugee racket” if Raoul Wallenberg had lived long enough to be connected in some way to Clay Shaw.

There was no shortage of antisemitism in Switzerland, as you can imagine. And so many
people went after Mantello, including the Arbeiter-Zetung, the socialist newspaper. They
were against the Permindex project in Basel, and so they went after Mantello.

The CIA, like the State Department, reported what a lot of people were saying. But, as I point
out in my blog post, they also knew that a lot of the allegations were false.
