When Jim Leavelle and Lee Oswald were on the elevator going down to the basement, Jim decided to sneak one past Oswald. Jim said to Oswald "Lee, if anyone shoots at you, I hope they're as a good a shot as you"; obviously meaning that the gunman would hit Oswald instead of Jim.
Oswald's response? He smiled and said "No one is going to shoot at me, you're just being melodramatic."
Back in 2019, Jim told myself and a couple of my buddies that he said this to Oswald not in an attempt to simply create mundane conversation with the alleged assassin. No. Jim told us that he said this to Oswald and he had a very specific reason for doing so. Jim wanted to see how Oswald would take the compliment. He wanted to see if Oswald would accept the praise.
By smiling and responding with "No one is going to shoot at me...", Oswald accepted Jim's compliment on his (Oswald's) shooting abilities. By accepting the compliment, Oswald was basically (and subconsciously) accepting Jim's statement that he (Oswald) took the shots.
Oswald accepted ownership of taking the shots without even realizing it.
Jim Leavelle was about ten times smarter than was Lee Oswald.
