The shutdown of the government is not the end of times. All the critical functions remain open. Many government agencies even continue to operate as usual because they have funds to remain open. The net impact is almost zero in the short term. The problem here is a persistent failure to address out of control spending. The Dems just kick the can down the road every time this issue comes around and then blame the Republicans for saying enough is enough. The Republicans don't have enough votes to implement the cuts that are necessary.
