General Charles P. Cabell was the Deputy Director of the CIA under DCI head Allen Dulles . Charles Cabells brother was Earle Cabell who was the Mayor of Dallas during JFK's trip to Dallas . Gen. Charles Cabell was relieved of his position at the CIA by JFK, where he would describe the President as a "traitor". Gen Cabell was the one who called JFK to plead with him for the close air support he believed the President had promised, but which JFK refused to provide.
In Earle Cabells capacity as Mayor, he not only supervised the Police Department but oversaw ceremonial activities, including parade routes and motorcades. There is no way that the Presidential motorcade could have taken the peculiar and improper route it took through Dealey Plaza - which even contradicted the route published in the morning paper - without the approval of the Mayor . In 1965, the House of Representatives passed a bill that required the government to preserve any objects related to the Kennedy Assassination which might contain evidentiary value . Several days later , Representative Earle Cabell who had become "Congressman Cabell" from Texas sent a letter to Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach (who replaced Bobby Kennedy at the Justice Department a year earlier). Cabell felt that it was "surplus" material owned and controlled by the federal government. To shut down those who might be "morbidly curious", Cabell recommended that the casket "be declared the property of the USA and, as such and in keeping with the best interest of the country, be destroyed. As JFK laid in his casket in the East Room in the casket that Gawlers had used to bury him in. To make a decision about whether or not JFK would have an open casket, RFK immediately agreed with Jackies feelings, "She's right, Close it." While the team from Gawlers had done an admirable job of repairing the massive trauma to the Presidents head, JFK was virtually unrecognizable as the man he once was.
The Kennedy Family agreed with Congressman Cabell's sentiments and Attorney General Katzenbach ensured that he casket had no evidentiary value . The Air Force picked the casket up from a secure building at the National Archives just a few blocks from the White House . JFK loved the sea and the Air Force loaded the casket on a C-130 and flew about 100 miles east of Washington D.C. and descended to about 500 feet above the water. Before taking off , the Air Force had drilled over 40 holes into the casket and filled it with 3- 80lb sandbags. It was also secured inside of a wooden crate and sealed shut in a matter so that it wouldn't break apart upon hitting the water. On February 18th, 1966 at 10:00 AM, the C-130's tail hatch was opened and the casket was pushed out of the aircraft . Parachutes softened its fall and the coffin began to sink instantly. The airplane circled the drop zone for about 20 minutes to make sure that the coffin did not resurface. I thought it was a bit odd that Earle Cabell would be the one who pushed to have the casket disposed of even though it made it look like it was all done for JFK because he loved the sea. I feel like the Cabell Brothers had a vendetta against JFK. Of course the head of the CIA , Allen Dulles would be fired by JFK after the Bay Of Pigs fiasco. Allen Dulles would become one of the members of the Warren Commission .
