Another cop that did what he was told to do and believed what he was told to believe.

I can't imagine any man (adult)  with an average IQ who would do what you describe ......     There are many adults who believe utterly irrational things...Because the want to....but not because they are ordered to accept the nutty ideas.

Leavelle accepted the story that was created for the gullible and then repeated and embellished the tale.....

And Roger Craig didn't and paid the price. Fear---the greatest motivator of all.

Unfortunately Roger Craig was not all that different than Leavelle...... They both believed fantastic tales.....   Craig got off on the wrong foot when he accepted the speculative idea that the rifle beneath the boxes of books was a Mauser.    He then embellished that idea by lying and saying that he saw 7.65 Mauser stamped right there on the barrel.

If you ad normal eyesight and a functioning brain, then you would not doubt that there were seven red rings on the windows on the south side, upper floor windows at the time President Kennedy was ambushed and murdered ......

And this, of course, means they were signals to LBJ!  We can ignore Gary Mack's explanation and newspaper accounts from years earlier indicating that these were used for fire safety and instead take your word for it.  I can write some dialogue for your fictional book:

LBJ:  "Now Lady Bird, if you see a red ring on yonder building get your sweet self down because they gonna be some shooting!"
Lady Bird:  "Which building?"
LBJ: "Yonder woman." Bang, bang, bang.  "Hot damn."
