Russia and the Confederacy
The following article draws parallels between Russia of 2022 and the Confederacy of 1861.
Opinions | Russia is suffering from the same problems that doomed the Confederacy - by the Washington Post

The wildly confident expectations and predictions of a quick victory. The difficulty of producing enough military supplies. The difficulties of getting enough volunteers (more of a problem for Russia than the Confederacy, but a problem for both).
A comparison that the article did not make was:
The Confederacy - "Cotton is King" - caused them to think Europe would help.
Russia - "Oil and Gas is King" - causing them to discount European aid to Ukraine.
Sometimes, a strong and just cause can cause countries to go against narrow self interest concerns. Particularly in 2022. After all, success of the Confederacy in the 1860's did not imperial the survival of any European countries. Success of Russia in 2022 does.
